What is a beer bath and why is it so popular
A beer bath is a traditional Czech spa treatment in which you immerse yourself in a wooden tub filled with warm water enriched with natural brewing ingredients – Žatec hops, barley malt and brewer's yeast. This combination of natural substances has a beneficial effect on the skin, relieves muscle tension and induces a deep sense of relaxation.
At Lázně Pramen Dejvická we offer beer baths in handcrafted oak and larch tubs with jacuzzi, each holding 1,000 litres. Every treatment takes place in complete privacy – in one of three private rooms with a fireplace, shower and a wheat-straw bed. According to a study by the Research Institute of Brewing and Malting (bfrij.cz), hops contain more than 100 biologically active compounds with proven relaxation effects.
Before your visit – how to prepare
Preparing for a beer bath is straightforward. We recommend following a few simple guidelines to make your experience as enjoyable as possible:
- Meals: It is best to bathe at least 1–2 hours after eating. The minimum interval is 30–60 minutes to avoid discomfort.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water before your visit. A warm bath increases perspiration, so staying well hydrated is important.
- What to bring: You don't need anything special – a towel, sheet, slippers, shower gel and hairdryer are provided free of charge.
- Arrival: Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled time. If you are more than 20 minutes late, your booking may be cancelled.
If you have a chronic health condition, we recommend consulting your doctor. Beer baths are not suitable during acute inflammation, elevated body temperature, pregnancy or allergy to beer ingredients.
Welcome and room introduction
Upon arriving at Lázně Pramen Dejvická at Dejvická 255/18 (2 minutes from Hradčanská metro, line A), you will be greeted by our staff. We will escort you to a private room that is yours for the entire duration of the treatment. The rooms available are:
- Golden Spring – the most spacious room with two oak jacuzzi tubs, a fireplace and a straw bed (2–4 guests)
- Ruby Spring – a cosy room with a larch jacuzzi tub, a fireplace and a straw bed (1–2 guests)
- Emerald Spring – a V.I.P. room with a larch tub and a cedar phyto-sauna (1–2 guests)
The staff will explain the procedure and ensure you have everything for a pleasant experience. The whirlpool starts automatically and shuts off after 20 minutes – the maximum time in the tub is 30 minutes.
Beer bath ingredients – what goes into the tub
The beer bath blend consists of three key ingredients, each with specific health benefits:
Žatec hops – the crown jewel of Czech spa ingredients. Hops are rich in essential oils (myrcene, humulene, linalool) with proven sedative and relaxing properties. According to the European Journal of Pharmacology (sciencedirect.com), hop extracts demonstrably reduce cortisol – the stress hormone.
Barley malt – contains B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6), minerals (zinc, selenium, magnesium) and amino acids. These nourish the skin, support hydration and aid regeneration. Malt is a natural emollient that leaves the skin soft and smooth.
Brewer's yeast – a rich source of B vitamins, biotin and trace elements. Yeast triggers skin regeneration processes and supports natural renewal. A study by Masaryk University in Brno (muni.cz) confirmed that contact with brewer's yeast improves the skin's barrier function.
The bathing process – 20 minutes of bliss
The water in the tub is heated to a pleasant 35–38 °C – the optimal temperature for muscle relaxation and absorption of active ingredients. You lower yourself into the tub and the whirlpool starts automatically, massaging your entire body with gentle bubbles. The whirlpool shuts off after 20 minutes – the maximum time in the tub is 30 minutes.
During the bath you can:
- Enjoy unlimited Czech beer – light or dark, poured right beside the tub
- Savour light snacks
- Listen to relaxing music
- Simply close your eyes and let the warmth and aroma of hops carry you away
A beer bath is not just a treatment – it is a ritual. The combination of warm water, natural ingredients and complete privacy creates an experience you will remember long after you leave the spa.
After 20 minutes we will let you know it is time to step out of the tub. It is important not to shower immediately after the bath – the active ingredients continue to work on your skin for several hours. According to the Czech Medical Chamber (lkcr.cz), it is ideal to wait at least 3–4 hours before showering.
Rest on the wheat straw bed – the longest part of the experience
After the bath comes the most enjoyable part – resting on a bed with fresh wheat straw by the fireplace in the private room. All the remaining time from your booking is entirely yours. The full treatment lasts a minimum of 1.5 hours, with relaxation taking up most of that time.
During your rest you have access to:
- Unlimited Czech beer (light or dark)
- Snacks – dried meat, nuts, cheese
- Fireplace with pleasant warmth
- Absolute privacy – no one enters the room
The straw bed – a wooden frame filled with fresh wheat straw – is a traditional element of Czech spas. Straw naturally regulates humidity and temperature, creating ideal conditions for relaxation. The Crop Research Institute (vurv.cz) confirmed that wheat straw has hypoallergenic properties and a pleasant scent.
Health benefits of a beer bath
A beer bath is not just a pleasant experience – it also offers a number of proven health benefits:
- Relaxation and stress relief – hop essential oils have a sedative effect on the nervous system
- Skin nourishment – B vitamins, minerals and amino acids from barley malt hydrate and nourish
- Improved circulation – warm water with jacuzzi dilates blood vessels and promotes blood flow
- Muscle relaxation – the combination of heat and jacuzzi massage releases muscle tension
- Detoxification – perspiration in the warm bath helps the body eliminate toxins
- Better sleep – hops are a natural sedative that promotes quality sleep
A balneological study published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine (sciencedirect.com) confirmed that regular herbal baths reduce cortisol levels by 15–25 % and improve sleep quality.
