A wine bath in Prague: what the 90 minutes hold
A wine bath can sound like something halfway between an old spa ritual and a scene from a romantic film. The reality is more precise than either. It is a carefully timed programme with a steady rhythm of its own. If you have read our piece on what happens during a beer bath, this will feel like meeting its sibling: the shape of the visit is identical, but instead of hops and malt, the room smells of red wine, honey and lavender. What follows walks you through the whole visit minute by minute, so you know exactly what to expect before you push open the door at Dejvická 255/18.
Your time in the room lasts 90 minutes, and it falls into three parts. Roughly 10 minutes go on preparation, when your attendant stirs a natural blend into the water right in front of you. Then comes the bath itself: usually around 20 minutes in a whirlpool tub at 35-38 °C, stretching to 30 if you can't bring yourself to get out. The remaining 50 minutes or so belong to a heated bed of wheat straw beside an electric fireplace. In other words, the 90 minutes already include the preparation; they are not simply bath time plus rest time added together.
You can book a wine bath in three of our private rooms: Ruby Spring (Rubínový pramen), Golden Spring (Zlatý pramen) and Emerald Spring (Smaragdový pramen). Each has its own mood and capacity, but the principle never changes. The room is yours for the entire booking. A bottle of red or white wine of your choice and a plate of fruit and cheese are waiting in the room, so there is nothing to order and nowhere else to go.
Over the next few sections we look at exactly what goes into the water, how the preparation unfolds, how to get in and out of the tub comfortably, what to do with your time on the straw and what the whole thing costs. Prices are always quoted per room, meaning per booking, never per person. The simplest option, a wine bath in a single tub for one or two guests, starts at €201 per room.
What goes into the water: red wine, grape seed and lavender
Every wine bath starts with a natural blend, and we only add it once you are in the room. The ingredients are ones you will recognise from a vineyard, a kitchen or a well-kept herb garden, and each has a job to do, mostly in how the bath smells, how it looks and how the water feels against your skin.
- Red wine - gives the water its ruby colour and a pronounced, gently fruity scent that reaches you the moment it is stirred in.
- Grape seed and skin extracts - earthier and faintly bitter, a counterweight to the fruit of the wine.
- Wine yeast - the same yeast that turns grape must into wine in the cellar.
- Honey - softens the whole impression and makes the water feel silkier to the touch.
- Herbs - add a lightly spiced, herbal edge to the aroma.
- French lavender flowers - dried blossoms that release their unmistakable scent as soon as they meet the warm water.
We would rather be straight with you. We don't offer the wine bath as a medical treatment, nor as a beauty treatment with guaranteed results. It is, above all, something for the senses. Warm water, the scent of wine and lavender, the low hum of the whirlpool and the quiet of a private room combine into a setting where your mind slows down on its own. If you leave feeling you have properly switched off for an hour and a half, the bath has done what it set out to do. And if you are drawn more to the scent of hops, try our beer bath, made with malt, hops and brewer's yeast.
The first ten minutes: your bath prepared while you watch
Your visit begins before you set foot in the room. Aim to arrive 10-15 minutes before your booking; our spa on Dejvická is about a two-minute walk from Hradčanská metro station. That buffer is not a formality. It gives you time to change, say hello and put your things away, so your 90 minutes start in genuine calm. It also matters practically: under our terms, if you are more than 15 minutes late, your booking may be shortened or cancelled without a refund.
Once you are inside, roughly ten minutes of preparation follow. The tub is already filled with warm water, and your attendant adds the natural blend while you watch: red wine poured in, grape seed and skin extracts, wine yeast, honey and herbs stirred through, then French lavender flowers scattered across the surface. You see for yourself exactly what is in the water, and within moments the clear bath has turned a deep ruby red. At the same time, the room fills with a fragrance that will stay with you until the very end.
While the bath comes together, the attendant shows you how everything works: where to find the towels and slippers and how long it is best to stay in the water. Please shower before you get into the tub; the shower is right there in your room. This is also the moment for questions. Not sure whether to get straight in or pour yourself a glass first? Ask. There is no wrong answer. The bottle of wine and the plate of fruit and cheese are there from the start.
Then the attendant leaves, and the room is entirely yours. Nobody else comes into your room during the booking, and unlike in a large wellness centre, there is no need to fit around strangers in a shared area. Only now does your bath truly begin.
Twenty minutes in the tub: temperature, whirlpool and a wooden step
The tubs are handmade from wood. In Ruby Spring and Emerald Spring they are larch; in Golden Spring there are two made of oak. You climb in over the rim, helped by a wooden step. If your mobility is limited in any way, please call us beforehand on +420 728 059 770 and we will talk you through the way in.
The water sits at 35-38 °C, close to body temperature: 35 °C is just below it, 38 °C just above. There is no jolt, nothing like the heat of a sauna, simply a soft, enveloping warmth. Each tub has a whirlpool that sets the water moving and massages the body gently with its jets.
Plan on around 20 minutes in the water. That is the length we recommend: long enough for the body to warm through and the aroma to open up, short enough that the heat never starts to tire you. If you want longer, you can stay in for up to 30 minutes. Beyond that we would advise against it, not least because the second half of the visit, the rest, matters just as much.
A practical word of advice: by all means take a glass of wine to the tub, but go easy. Warm water and alcohol together hit harder than you might expect, and the idea is to leave relaxed rather than sluggish. So it is worth saving most of the bottle for the rest afterwards. When you are ready to get out, use the wooden step again, wrap yourself in a towel and move over to the straw. After the bath, we recommend not rinsing the blend off for about two hours.
Fifty minutes on straw by the electric fireplace
After the bath comes the rest, and it makes up more than half of the visit. For roughly 50 minutes you lie on a heated bed of loose wheat straw with a faint, pleasant smell of grain. After the warm water, the transition feels entirely natural: your body doesn't cool down abruptly but gradually, on something warm and soft.
Beside the bed sits an electric fireplace. It gives off a warm glow, but no fire burns in it. The warmth in the room comes from the heated straw, the water in the tub, the glow of the fireplace and the low, warm light of the lamps. The effect is something like a winter evening at a country cottage, minus the smoke and the business of feeding the fire.
This is the moment for the bottle of wine and the plate of fruit and cheese that come with every wine bath. They are not there for decoration. After a warm soak, a little something to eat is welcome, and cheese and fruit sit naturally alongside wine. Talk, say nothing at all, or doze for half an hour. If you fall asleep on the warm straw, that is entirely fine.
If there are two of you, this part has a completely different feel from the bath. In the water it is all about the senses; on the straw, conversation takes over. That makes the wine bath a good anniversary present, or a quiet way to mark the end of a demanding week. Come alone and the rest becomes more private still: fifty minutes in which nobody messages you, calls you or wants anything from you. We suggest leaving your phone in your bag, although nobody would blame you for one photo of that ruby-red tub.
Where to book it: Ruby, Golden and Emerald Spring
We prepare wine baths in three rooms. Each has its own atmosphere, capacity and features, but the price depends not on the name of the room but on how many tubs are filled and how many guests there are. All prices are per room, meaning per booking, never per person. If two of you share one tub, you pay exactly what you would pay coming alone.
- Wine bath in one tub (1-2 guests, 90 min): from €201 per room. Available in Ruby Spring and in Golden Spring.
- Two wine tubs at once, Golden Spring only (90 min): €268 for 2 guests, €354 for 3 guests, €367 for 4 guests, always for the whole booking.
- A combination of one beer tub and one wine tub, Golden Spring only (90 min): €238 for 2 guests, €278 for 3 guests, €307 for 4 guests.
- V.I.P. Wine SPA in Emerald Spring (1-2 guests, 150 min): from €326 per room.
- Delux Wine SPA in Emerald Spring (1 guest only, 150 min): from €326, and the only package that includes a bathrobe.
Ruby Spring is our most intimate room, made for one or two, with a larch whirlpool tub, an electric fireplace and heated straw. Golden Spring is the opposite: our most spacious room, and the only one with two tubs, both oak, for two to four guests. It suits two couples, a group of friends celebrating, or a pair where one craves wine and the other beer.
Emerald Spring is our V.I.P. room. Alongside a larch whirlpool tub, it has a cedar phyto-sauna: a cedar barrel you sit in up to your neck, with your head outside. The V.I.P. Wine SPA runs as a sequence: 15 minutes in the cedar barrel, 30 minutes of relaxation massage or body scrub, then the wine bath and the rest, with a bottle of wine and a plate of fruit and cheese waiting in the room. The whole programme lasts 150 minutes and is designed for one couple or one guest. The Delux Wine SPA goes further still: after the phyto-sauna come 20 minutes of wine scrub, a 40-minute wine wrap and a 40-minute full-body massage with grape seed oil, finishing with a rest by the fireplace, a glass of wine and a cheese plate.
A sample evening for two, minute by minute
To make all of this easier to picture, let's follow one entirely made-up, purely illustrative example. Imagine a couple who have booked a single-tub wine bath in Ruby Spring for 19:00 on a Thursday. They pay one price for the room, from €201, even though there are two of them in the tub. Their evening might look something like this:
- 18:45 - they arrive at Dejvická 255/18, two minutes from Hradčanská metro, change and are welcomed.
- 19:00-19:10 - preparation in the room: the attendant stirs red wine, grape seed and skin extracts, wine yeast, honey, herbs and French lavender flowers into the water in front of them; then a quick shower in the room.
- 19:10-19:30 - in via the wooden step, then the bath at 35-38 °C with the whirlpool, a glass of wine resting on the rim.
- 19:30-19:35 - out of the tub, into towels, over to the heated straw.
- 19:35-20:25 - around fifty minutes of rest by the electric fireplace, with the bottle of wine, fruit and cheese, conversation or a short nap.
- 20:30 - their time in the room ends; they change and head back out into the streets of Dejvice.
If one of them wanted to linger in the water, the bath could stretch to 30 minutes and the rest would shrink a little; the overall ninety minutes stay the same. Had four friends turned up instead of two, it would make more sense to book a wine bath in two tubs in Golden Spring, where four guests would pay €367 for the whole booking. And if one of them preferred beer, the beer-and-wine combination would come to €307 for four.
A few small tips. Don't arrive starving, and don't arrive stuffed either. Skip the pre-drinks, so you can properly enjoy the wine in the room. And expect to feel pleasantly drowsy afterwards, which is why a wine bath works best as the full stop at the end of the day rather than a break between two meetings.
Booking, cancellations and giving a wine bath as a gift
The quickest way to book a wine bath is online, through the booking form on our website, where you choose the room, the date and the number of guests. You can also call us on +420 728 059 770 or email info@laznepramen.cz. Your booking becomes binding once our confirmation email arrives. For V.I.P. packages and groups in particular, we may ask for a deposit or payment in advance. We are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 22:00, and at weekends from 10:00 to 23:00.
If your plans change, the rules are simple. Cancel more than 48 hours ahead and it costs nothing, with a full refund. Cancel 24-48 hours ahead and we charge 50% of the price; cancel less than 24 hours ahead, or fail to show up, and we charge 100%. Moving your booking to another date is free if you ask at least 48 hours in advance by email or phone, subject to availability. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your start time; if you are more than 15 minutes late, your booking may be shortened or cancelled without a refund. The terms and conditions in force at the moment of confirmation always apply, and that is also where you will find the full list of contraindications.
A wine bath also works well as a present. We offer two kinds of gift vouchers, both as PDFs: a voucher for a set amount, which lets the recipient choose both the treatment and the date, and a voucher for a specific treatment, where all they need to pick is the day. The validity period is printed on each voucher. If you buy a voucher online, you can withdraw from the purchase within 14 days.
Lázně Pramen has been running since 2008, and the wine bath is among the things we most enjoy doing: ninety minutes in a room of your own, with nothing to organise and the scent of wine and lavender all around you. Browse all our treatments, choose between Ruby, Golden and Emerald Spring, and book your slot. If you have any questions at all, get in touch. And for more on how things work here, head to our blog.
