What summer really does to your skin

Summer looks glorious in photographs, but for your skin it is one of the most punishing stretches of the year. Ultraviolet radiation, salty seawater, chlorinated pools, hot wind and air-conditioned rooms combine into a cocktail that slowly erodes the skin's protective barrier. What passes for a healthy tan in August is in fact a defence reaction: skin cells crank up melanin production to shield the deeper layers from DNA damage. Come autumn, the colour fades and the truth surfaces beneath it - drier, thinner, less resilient skin.

UV light that reaches the dermis breaks down collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin its firmness and its ability to spring back. Specialists attribute the overwhelming majority of visible signs of premature ageing to long-term sun exposure, a process known as photoageing. Beyond fine lines, it shows up as uneven pigmentation, broken capillaries and a generally tired look. Then there is oxidative stress: sunlight triggers the formation of free radicals, aggressive molecules that damage cell membranes.

Salt and chlorine make matters worse by stripping away the natural lipids on the skin's surface, the sealing layer that keeps moisture locked in. That is why, after a week by the sea, we so often feel tightness, tiny flakes or an itch. The good news is that skin has a remarkable capacity to regenerate, provided we give it the right conditions. Autumn is ideal for exactly that. The sun is no longer so fierce, temperatures drop, and the skin naturally shifts into repair mode. This is precisely the season to give your complexion focused care that replenishes lost moisture, delivers antioxidants and kick-starts fresh collagen. In the chapters that follow we will show you how - both at home and with natural spa care in our private rooms.

Why autumn is the best time to rebuild

There is a simple physiological reason why demanding skin care is easier to handle in autumn than at the height of summer. Many active regenerating treatments - from stronger exfoliation to ingredients that spur cell renewal - increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight. In summer, with a high UV index, treated skin is far more likely to tan quickly or develop pigment spots. In autumn the sun is milder, the days are fewer, and the skin can go through deeper renewal without the risk of fresh damage.

Autumn is also a season of transition. The body adjusts to cooler weather, the humidity outdoors falls, and the heating season begins, drying out the air indoors. So the skin faces new challenges at the very moment it is still recovering from summer. It makes sense, then, to time your restorative care so that the skin enters winter reinforced, well nourished and with a stronger protective barrier. Skip autumn and you will usually spend the winter fighting dry, red, sensitive skin.

Psychologically, too, autumn is a time to slow down. Summer is hectic, full of travel and time outdoors. As the days shorten, we naturally seek warmth, calm and the rituals that ground us. This is where skin care meets wellness: a warm bath, a gentle massage and a stretch of time without a phone are not only about beauty but about resetting the nervous system as a whole. Studies show that chronic stress undermines the skin barrier and slows healing, which makes rest as much a part of skin care as any cream.

At our spa we see this seasonal logic play out every year. After the holidays, guests arrive with dry, sun-weary skin, looking for something deeper than an ordinary moisturiser. Natural baths rich in hops, malt, yeast or grape extracts deliver nutrients exactly where the skin needs them. Precisely how these ingredients work is the subject of the next chapter.

Grape seed and brewer's yeast: what they do for skin

The two ingredients our baths are built on are prized in cosmetics for good reason. Grape seed extract is one of the richest natural sources of proanthocyanidins, powerful antioxidants from the polyphenol family. These molecules neutralise the free radicals that build up in the skin over summer under the influence of UV light, helping to slow oxidative damage to cells. Scientific reviews have long shown that grape polyphenols support collagen protection and help keep skin supple.

Grape seeds also contain natural oils rich in linoleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid that is a key component of the skin barrier. When the skin has enough of it, the barrier seals better and loses less water. That is exactly what sun-parched summer skin needs. This is why, alongside red wine, our wine bath includes grape seed extract, vine leaves, honey, herbs and French lavender flowers - a blend that hydrates the skin while loading it with antioxidants.

Brewer's yeast, the foundation of the beer bath, is in turn a treasure trove of B vitamins, amino acids and trace elements such as selenium and zinc. B vitamins support cell renewal and contribute to healthy-looking skin, while zinc and selenium bring anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. To this the beer bath adds Žatec hops and malt. Hops contain flavonoids and bitter acids with calming, antimicrobial properties, while malt supplies polysaccharides and proteins that soften the skin.

The advantage of a bath is that these substances act on the whole body at once, and water at 35-38 °C opens the pores, so the active ingredients absorb far better than a cream applied to dry skin ever could. That is why, after the bath, we suggest you resist washing the extract off with soap - more on that in its own chapter. And if you would like to take the same ingredients home, at reception we sell our own line of beer cosmetics, which we make ourselves.

The beer bath as a post-holiday regeneration ritual

A beer bath may sound at first like an experience rather than skin care, but it is genuinely both. In a hand-filled wooden tub, warm water is blended with real craft beer Petrovické zlato, Žatec hops, malting malt and brewer's yeast. The mix is added right in front of you, so you can see exactly what goes into the water. At 35-38 °C, the water warms the muscles, releases tension and opens the pores so that B vitamins and other actives can be absorbed into the skin.

The treatment has a thoughtful structure: you spend around 20 minutes in the bath with its automatic whirlpool, followed by roughly 50 minutes of rest on a heated bed of wheat straw. The whole ritual lasts 90 minutes. The warm straw bed keeps the body toasty, so regeneration carries on after you step out of the tub while the active ingredients continue working on your skin. The glow of an electric fireplace and the warm light of the lamps complete a soothing atmosphere with no open flame.

For skin worn out by summer, the beer bath is an ideal blend of hydration, nourishment and deep release. The yeast delivers vitamins that support cell renewal, the hops calm the skin and the malt softens it. Many guests say their skin feels smoother and less taut from the very first touch afterwards. Throughout, you can pour yourself light and dark beer from a tap right in the room, alongside a few nibbles.

On price, the beer bath is the most accessible way into this kind of care. In our most intimate room, Rubínový pramen, with a single larch tub for one or two guests, prices start at 148 € per booking. The price is for the whole room whether you come alone or as a pair - you are paying for privacy and for the experience, not per person. If you would rather have two tubs side by side, the more spacious Zlatý pramen takes up to four guests.

The wine bath: antioxidants against photoageing

If the beer bath is built on vitamins and calm, the wine bath is above all about antioxidants. That makes it a logical choice right after summer, when the skin is carrying the aftermath of oxidative stress from UV exposure. The water is enriched with red wine, grape seed extract, vine leaves, honey, herbs and French lavender flowers. The polyphenols and proanthocyanidins in grapes help neutralise free radicals and support the collagen that the sun spent all summer breaking down.

Honey in the bath acts as a natural humectant, binding water and helping to keep it in the skin, while lavender and herbs soothe irritated or reddened complexions. The structure mirrors the beer bath: around 20 minutes in the whirlpool at 35-38 °C, then roughly 50 minutes of rest on the heated straw bed, 90 minutes in all. During the relaxation phase the actives keep sinking into skin that the warmth has already prepared to receive them.

The wine bath has one extra advantage over the beer bath for anyone who also wants a taste experience: the booking includes a bottle of wine and a plate of fruit and cheese. It is skin care that also tastes like a small celebration of summer's end. Prices for the wine bath start at 201 € per booking in Rubínový pramen for one or two guests, and as with the beer bath, the price is for the whole room, not per person.

To bring both worlds together, at Zlatý pramen you can order a combination of beer and wine baths in two tubs at once, so each guest can have their own bath to taste - one beer, one wine. The combo is designed for two to four guests and is a favourite among couples who, back from the holidays, cannot agree between hydrating yeast and grape antioxidants. After summer, there is a strong case for trying both.

Skin care at home: how to make the spa effect last

A spa ritual is a wonderful start, but the real work of rebuilding skin happens in the weeks that follow, at home, in your daily routine. The first rule we always remind guests of at our spa is not to wash off the beer or wine extract with soap after the bath. We suggest leaving the actives on the skin for about two hours - that alone keeps the skin softer and better nourished for a day or two. You can of course shower, but ideally with lukewarm water and without harsh shower gels.

Autumn home care for post-summer skin should rest on a few clear pillars. Here is a practical checklist:

  • Gentle cleansing - swap the degreasing summer gels for creamy washes that do not compromise a weakened barrier.
  • Layered hydration - pair a serum of water-binding ingredients with a richer cream that seals the moisture in, especially during the heating season.
  • Antioxidants in the morning - products with vitamin C or plant polyphenols help repair the summer's oxidative damage.
  • Mild exfoliation - once a week, clear away dead cells so actives can reach deeper, but do not overdo it.
  • Sun protection - keep using SPF even in autumn, because UVA passes through both clouds and glass.
  • Water and diet - skin hydrated from within responds better to whatever you apply on top.

If you would like to take home the very ingredients we use in the baths, reception carries our own line of beer cosmetics, made since 2008. The range includes a beer shampoo, a hair balm, a body peeling, a body scrub and a bath salt. It is not only about baths - we look after hair too, because hops and yeast are as good for the scalp as they are for the skin on your body. An occasional spa ritual combined with home care using natural extracts between visits is the most effective way to keep your skin nourished and resilient right through autumn.

V.I.P. rituals and massages for deeper regeneration

For guests who want to give a whole afternoon over to recovery after a demanding summer, we have premium rituals in our V.I.P. room, Smaragdový pramen. This room comes with a single larch tub and whirlpool, an electric fireplace, a heated straw bed and, additionally, a cedar phytosauna - a small Siberian cedar cabin you step into with your body while your head stays outside. The herbal steam from the cedar barrel warms the body and readies the skin for the care that follows. The premium packages are for one or two guests and run 2.5 to 3 hours.

The V.I.P. Beer SPA, starting at 293 €, takes you through the cedar phytosauna, then a relaxing massage or body scrub, followed by a beer bath and finally rest on the straw bed with unlimited draught beer and refreshments. The V.I.P. Wine SPA from 326 € follows the same arc but with a wine bath, a bottle of wine and a plate of fruit and cheese. For maximum indulgence there is the Delux Wine SPA from 326 €, for one guest only, which adds a wine wrap, a full-body massage with grape seed oil and, uniquely, a bathrobe.

Massage is a chapter of regeneration in its own right. In the salt cave Safírový pramen, whose walls are built from ten tonnes of three kinds of salt, we offer massages with natural oils. A 30-minute relaxing back and neck massage starts at 33 €, an hour-long full-body relaxing massage at 50 €, and a more intensive sports massage at 75 €. Massage boosts circulation in the skin, helps flush waste products and, in the salt environment, releases the tension stored up over a hectic summer. The salt cave also offers 45-minute pressotherapy lymphatic drainage, which cannot, however, be combined with a bath in a single visit. Whatever you choose, the aim is the same: a deep reset for body and skin after summer.

How to book a slot and when a voucher makes sense

Planning your autumn skin renewal is simple. Book through the online form on our website, where you choose your date, the number of guests and the type of bath. You will find us at Dejvická 255/18 in Prague 6, just a two-minute walk from Hradčanská metro station, so we are easy to reach from anywhere in the city. We are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 22:00 and at weekends from 10:00 to 23:00, which leaves plenty of room for afternoon and evening rituals alike. If you are unsure what to choose, do not hesitate to contact us - we are happy to advise which treatment suits your post-summer skin best.

A reminder of the key pricing rule: prices are always for the whole room, that is, per booking, never per person. So a beer bath from 148 € in Rubínový pramen costs the same whether you come alone or as a pair. The number of guests and the price are set by the tub configuration in each room. For a couple, a single tub is the ideal choice, while two separate tubs at Zlatý pramen only start to make sense for a group.

A gift voucher makes a wonderful autumn present. Gift vouchers are digital, valid for 12 months, and the recipient picks both the date and the type of treatment themselves. They work beautifully for someone who came back from holiday exhausted, and equally as a pre-Christmas gift that never goes stale. Thanks to the year-long validity, there is no need to decide right away - the voucher can be used whenever the moment suits.

One final note for the record: our baths and massages are not suitable for everyone. The full list of contraindications - including pregnancy, cardiovascular conditions, acute inflammations and allergies to bath ingredients - is set out in our terms and conditions. If in doubt, consult a doctor before booking. For everyone else, autumn skin renewal in our private rooms is a lovely way to bid summer farewell and prepare your skin for winter. Browse the full range of our treatments and find the one for you.
