Why regularity matters more than intensity

Balneotherapy – treatment through bathing – is one of the oldest medical practices in Europe. Modern research confirms that the therapeutic effects of mineral and herbal baths depend directly on treatment regularity rather than the duration of a single session.

A 2011 meta-analysis (Fioravanti et al., Rheumatology International) showed that a balneotherapy course of 6–12 sessions at intervals of 3–7 days provides a statistically significant reduction in pain and inflammatory markers, lasting up to 6 months after the course ends. One-off treatments offer short-term relaxation but do not trigger the body's adaptive mechanisms.

At Lázně Pramen, Dejvická 255/18, Prague 6, treatments take place in handcrafted 1,000-litre oak and larch tubs at 35–38 °C – a temperature range that stimulates circulation and opens pores without overloading the cardiovascular system. Each visit includes 20–30 minutes in the tub with a whirlpool, followed by rest on a wheat straw bed beside a fireplace. Total time in the room is approximately 90 minutes.

Beer bath: how often and why

The beer bath at Lázně Pramen is far more than warm water with beer. The formula includes Žatec hops, brewer's yeast, malt and genuine Czech Bernard beer. Each ingredient has its own biological action and its own accumulation kinetics in the skin.

Hops (Humulus lupulus) contain xanthohumol and 8-prenylnaringenin – flavonoids with pronounced anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity. The essential oils of hops – myrcene, humulene, caryophyllene – have a sedative effect, reducing anxiety levels within 20 minutes of transdermal exposure (Zanoli & Zavatti, 2008).

Brewer's yeast is a natural concentrate of B vitamins (B1, B2, B5, B6) and biotin. These vitamins are involved in epidermal regeneration: B5 (pantothenic acid) accelerates the healing of micro-damage, B6 regulates sebum production, and biotin strengthens the keratin structure.

Recommended frequency:

  • General wellness: once every 3–4 weeks
  • Course for skin problems (acne, psoriasis, dryness): 6–8 sessions at 5–7-day intervals
  • Muscle recovery (athletes): once every 1–2 weeks during intense training periods

A beer bath in the Rubínový pramen and Zlatý pramen rooms starts from €129 per session. Unlimited Bernard beer on tap beside the tub and snacks are included.

Wine bath: a polyphenol course for skin

The wine bath is a more specialised treatment focused on antioxidant and anti-ageing effects. The formula includes red wine, grape seed and skin extract, wine yeast, honey, medicinal herbs and French lavender flowers.

The key active compounds are polyphenols: resveratrol, proanthocyanidins (OPC) and quercetin. A study by Ndiaye et al. (2011, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics) confirmed that transdermal resveratrol protects skin cells from UV-induced DNA damage and stimulates collagen type I and III synthesis.

OPC from grape seeds are among the most potent natural antioxidants – 20 times more active than vitamin C. They strengthen capillary walls, even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of rosacea.

Recommended frequency:

  • Anti-ageing programme: a course of 4–6 sessions at 7–10-day intervals, repeated 2–3 times per year
  • General detox and toning: once every 2–4 weeks
  • Pre-event preparation (wedding, anniversary): 3 sessions over 3 weeks before the date

A wine bath starts from €183. A bottle of wine of your choice (red or white) and a fruit-and-cheese platter are included.

Massage in the salt cave: cortisol reduction

In the Safírový pramen room, massage takes place in unique conditions – a salt cave lined with three types of salt: Himalayan pink, Dead Sea and Polish mine salt. Salt aerosols cleanse the airways and create a microclimate that enhances the therapeutic effect of massage.

A meta-analysis by Moyer et al. (2004, Psychological Bulletin), based on 37 studies, showed that a course of massage (≥5 sessions) reduces cortisol levels by 31 %, anxiety by 37 % and depression symptoms by 29 %. A single massage lowers situational anxiety, but a cumulative effect on the hormonal profile is achieved only through regularity.

Recommended frequency:

  • Chronic stress / office work: once every 1–2 weeks
  • Sports recovery: 1–2 times per week during competition season
  • Prevention: 1–2 times per month

Three types available: relaxation (30 min – from €33), full-body (60 min – from €50), sports (60 min – from €75).

Combo and V.I.P.: when to combine

Combining several treatments in a single visit amplifies the therapeutic effect through synergy: massage warms the muscles and opens pores, the phytosauna activates sweating and detoxification, and the bath delivers bioactive compounds through prepared skin.

Combo "Two in One" (Zlatý pramen only) – two 1,000-litre tubs with whirlpool. Ideal for couples or groups of 2–4 who want to try both the beer and the wine bath in a single visit. The beer + wine combo starts from €238 for two.

V.I.P. Beer SPA and V.I.P. Wine SPA (Smaragdový pramen) – a full 2.5–3-hour ritual: 30-minute massage → cedar barrel phytosauna (15 min) → bath with whirlpool (20–30 min) → rest on a straw bed beside a fireplace. V.I.P. Beer SPA starts from €293, V.I.P. Wine SPA from €326.

Recommended frequency for combo / V.I.P.:

  • As a "reset": once every 1–2 months
  • As a course programme: 4 sessions at 10–14-day intervals
  • As a gift: a gift voucher for V.I.P. is one of the most popular options

Seasonal calendar: a year plan

Balneotherapy is effective year-round, but different seasons call for different emphases.

Spring (March – May): post-winter detox. Wine bath 2–3 times + massage every 2 weeks. Polyphenols help the skin recover from the heating season.

Summer (June – August): maintaining tone. Beer bath once every 3–4 weeks – hops and yeast protect the skin from oxidative stress. Massage as needed.

Autumn (September – November): preparing for the cold. A course of 4–6 wine baths to strengthen the skin barrier. OPC and resveratrol boost collagen synthesis before the heating season.

Winter (December – February): intensive care. Combo or V.I.P. once a month + salt-cave massage every 2 weeks. Salt aerosols support the immune system during the cold and flu season.
